Hey, I’m Rachel!

Rachel Harris wildlife artist

Nature artist. Science nerd. Wildlife enthusiast.

I’m based in nipaluna/Hobart, on the wild and wonder-filled island of lutruwita/Tasmania.

I specialise in highly detailed coloured pencil drawings—mainly native birds and animals, and sometimes the occasional pet. My style is realistic, heart-first, and a little bit obsessed with capturing the tiniest feather detail.

Art and animals have always been my thing. But my path to becoming a full-time artist? Not exactly straight. I took a long detour through the world of science—earning a PhD in zoology, researching animal behaviour in the U.S., and now working in public policy. That scientific lens is still with me today: it shapes how I see the world and helps me bring movement, mood, and accuracy to every piece I create.

I rediscovered my love of drawing in 2020 and haven’t looked back. Evenings. Weekends. Bushwalks turned reference hunts. I’ve even picked up a few awards. And now, a little online home where my love for wildlife, science, and art collide.

But here’s the thing: our native species need more than admiration. They need advocates. I use my art to turn heads, spark curiosity, and (hopefully) make people fall in love with the wild things we risk losing.

My art is my way of saying: Look closer. Fall in love. Feel something. And maybe—just maybe—act.

A portion of every sale supports wildlife conservation right here in Tasmania.

Thanks for stopping by. If you feel a connection to something you see, or just want to chat birds and bushwalks—get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.
